The violence which greeted the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election has resulted in a presidential campaign slang by John Mahama as “Boot for Boot”
John Mahama, a presidential aspirant of the NDC did not spare words regarding the Ayawaso incident.
He noted that his party, the NDC will match the NPP ‘Boot for Boot’ if similar violence erupts during the 2020 general elections. According to the former president, the NPP must be ashamed of themselves for deploying violent tactics during the by-election.
He opined that if this happens in the 2020 general elections, the NDC would be forced to respond with violence as well. Concerning Mahama’s comments, some NPP members and officials of some civil organizations have condemned them.
They claimed Mahama’s comments could plunge Ghana into chaos during the 2020 elections thus he should apologize. In John Mahama’s defense, the Commissioner for CHRAJ, Joseph Whittal has said that it is unfair for some Ghanaians to call on Mahama to apologize. He said even though the taste of Mahama’s comments are not positive, the National Security should be called to apologize instead.
