Atletico were hit with a hard blow to the chin on Saturday by Real Madrid.
Their first defeat of the season at home leaves Los Rojiblancos in a compromised position in LaLiga Santander after also losing last time out against Real Betis on the road.
Six points dropped at the worst possible moment could place them, pending Barcelona’s result on Sunday, nine points off the top. As if that were not bad enough, Real Madrid have also snatched second place away from them after Atletico had led their rivals for several months.
A devastating and unexpected Copa del Rey exit against Girona in the last 16, a tournament they had a lot of hope in, leaves things looking bleak. It had previously been around in which Diego Simeone’s side had never been eliminated.
Although the subsequent results following that game were good, the reality is that those defeats now leave Atletico with only one feasible goal if they are to add to the UEFA Super Cup they won at the start of the year, that of winning the Champions League. The big-eared cup now takes on perhaps a bigger dimension than before, if that were possible.
It seems that it is the only title available to them now, although it will not be easy with Juventus on the horizon.
Cristiano Ronaldo and co. stand in the way of Atletico in games scheduled for February 20 and March 12. From that tie, a team could emerge who dream of ending the season by holding the trophy aloft at home. Until then though, Atletico will live on the edge. Source Marca
